Japan's envoy, Sadako Ogata, urged the international community to disarm Afghanistan's militias and strengthen the international peacekeeping force, Isaf, which at the moment is only deployed in the capital.

Security: This is one of the key areas of international support. Nato has taken over the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and is about to agree a plan to expand its operations.

The silence in the media is deafening....

So now NATO is in the middle east...its a part of the drug war there...and its being used as a part of the coalition...

...and everyone carries on as if nothing is going on...

--------------------------------

This must rank amongst the sneakiest quietest escalation in modern history.

(You have to admire the speed that the US administration is moving at to get us all locked into the Mid east before the next US election.)

The whole scenario is getting more and more surreal.
They only booted the Communist Russians out a few years ago.

The main reason the Afghans are not giving us serious problems is because we are letting most of them get on with their lives, unlike in Iraq.

The reserve base in my home city is sending a hoard of troops to Afghanistan on behalf of NATO. One of them, a former co-worker, said to me on Friday: "I hope I'm going in with NATO instead of the UN ... with the UN I have to wait until there's a gun pointing at me to shoot. With NATO, I only need to hear gunshots, or see someone with a gun, and I can start shooting."

Charming.

Nato to boost terror co-operation

Nato foreign ministers have agreed a series of measures to fight terrorism, including more sharing of intelligence.
The decision - on the day the alliance officially welcomed seven new members - comes three weeks after the Madrid bombings that killed 191 people.

Speaking in Brussels, US Secretary of State Colin Powell urged Nato to consider a new role in Iraq.

But his German counterpart, Joschka Fischer, told reporters the alliance was already "overstretched".
